A detailing set from the Czech manufacturer Plusmodel capturing the Maxim machine gun in 1:35 scale. It is an accessory for dioramas, for a weapon crew among figures and for vehicles that carried the gun. Casting allows finer detail than can be molded into plastic, above all on the cooling jacket of the barrel and on the sighting parts.
The Maxim was the first genuinely successful automatic machine gun and its design influenced the development of infantry weapons for decades. Its hallmark is the massive cylindrical jacket around the barrel, through which water flowed and carried the heat away during sustained fire. The weapon was used in both world wars and stayed in service with many armies long afterward, because it was reliable and stood up to enormous punishment.
Wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and level the surfaces. Glue them with cyanoacrylate. Paint the cooling jacket a dark steel color and pick the edges out with a dry brush so that the cylindrical shape stands out. Work a dark wash into the recesses and finish the barrel with a darkened muzzle. If you place the weapon in muddy surroundings, add pigments to the base but keep the mechanism itself clean.
