An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet T-37 amphibious light tank in 1:35 scale from Hobby Boss. The Early in the name refers to the early production form of the vehicle. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; check the exact part count, the contents of the decal sheet and whether photo-etched parts are included against the information on the box.
The T-37 belonged to the first generation of Soviet amphibious light tanks of the 1930s. It was a small, lightly armored vehicle with a crew of two, meant for reconnaissance, liaison and escort work; the armament was a machine gun in a small rotating turret offset to one side of the hull. Buoyancy floats above the tracks and a propeller with a rudder at the stern let it swim, so the vehicle could cross a water obstacle without preparation. That capability was paid for with thin armor and weak armament that sufficed only against infantry. The design was revised repeatedly during production, so early and later examples differ in the shape of the hull, the turret and the details of the running gear.
Finish and paint the running gear and the hull interior before you close the hull up — on a vehicle this small you will not reach those parts later. Assemble and paint the tracks and road wheels separately and fit them only after the hull has its base coat. Dry-fit the buoyancy floats and their joints in advance, because on small tanks that is exactly where most of the filling work waits. Let the base color dry, bring out the engraved detail with a dark wash and dust the lower hull, the running gear and the fenders with pigments — an amphibious vehicle looks convincing with traces of mud and dried water. Avoid exaggerated contrast, because a small model easily ends up looking like a toy.
