About product

Japanese submarine I-19 in 1:350 scale from AFV Club

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Japanese ocean-going submarine I-19 in 1:350 scale, manufacturer's part number SE73506. The package holds a plastic hull, photo-etched brass parts, clear parts and two decal sheets - one for the submarine, the other for its shipboard floatplane. The model can be built as a full hull on a stand or as a waterline version. The finished model reaches roughly 31 cm, so even in this small scale it is a long piece for the cabinet.

The real subject

The I-19 belonged to the large Japanese submarines of the B1 type, which carried a hangar and a catapult ahead of the conning tower for a small floatplane used for reconnaissance. It entered history on September 15, 1942 off Guadalcanal: with a single salvo of torpedoes it hit the American aircraft carrier Wasp, which went to the bottom after fires, and the same salvo damaged the battleship North Carolina and the destroyer O'Brien, which also sank a month later. The I-19 herself was lost at the end of 1943 near the Gilbert Islands.

Building and painting tips

Decide first whether you are building the full hull or only the part above the waterline - the joining of the hull halves is then done differently. The long fore-and-aft seam is the most visible thing on the finished model, so fill it and sand it smooth, and only then rescribe the drain holes. Glue the photo-etched railings and periscopes with cyanoacrylate glue onto a dry primer. Below the waterline a red-brown protective finish suits, above it a dark gray; keep the weathering light, as rust on submarines is painted with care.

Who the model is for

  • builders of the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1:350 scale
  • modelers of submarines and the undersea war in the Pacific
  • anyone interested in submarines that carried an aircraft
  • builders with experience of photo-etched parts

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
