An injection-molded plastic kit of the American LCAC landing craft air cushion in 1:350 scale from Bronco. It is not a ship in the usual sense, but a hovercraft that rides on a cushion of air over the water and over the beach alike. In 1:350 scale this is a small model, suitable as a companion to a large amphibious ship or for a naval diorama.
The LCAC is an American air-cushion landing craft that from the 1980s onward replaced the classic landing craft. It rides on a cushion of air enclosed by a flexible skirt and is driven by two large pusher propellers in circular ducts at the stern. It is precisely because it rides on air that it can run straight up onto the beach and on over the shallows, so it does not have to look for a suitable shore — by some estimates many times more of the world's coastline suits it than suits a classic landing craft. And it carries a main battle tank while doing so. The craft are carried in the floodable well decks of large amphibious ships.
The craft is small, so it pays to assemble and paint the platform and the skirt first and to fit the propellers with their circular ducts last; they are thin and easily bent out of shape. Do not paint the flexible skirt under the platform in pure black, a very dark gray with a dusty lower edge suits it better. If you are setting the model into a diorama, bear in mind that a hovercraft throws up a cloud of spray behind it, which can be suggested with white cotton wool or acrylic gel. Cargo on the platform gives the model its sense of scale.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
