An injection-molded plastic kit of the American heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis in 1:350 scale from Academy. In 1:350 scale this is a large model, and once finished it needs a good deal of room in a display case and a solid stand.
The USS Indianapolis was an American heavy cruiser that went through the whole war in the Pacific and served among other things as flagship of the Fifth Fleet. She is best known, however, for her end: in July 1945, after a secret voyage in which she delivered components of a nuclear weapon to Tinian, she was sunk by a Japanese submarine. The ship went down in twelve minutes, and because nobody knew about the voyage on account of its secrecy, the survivors spent several days in the water without help; of nearly twelve hundred men only about three hundred survived. It is the greatest loss of life on a single ship in the history of the US Navy.
Glue the hull up and fill and sand back the lengthwise seam carefully; on a long hull every blemish is conspicuous. Finish and paint the superstructure and the armament separately and fit them onto the completed hull. The American wartime gray finish takes a fine wash on the decks and the vertical surfaces, but only a very light one. You can suggest the wooden decks with a lighter shade and a darker wash between the planks. If there are no photo-etched parts in the box, railing can be added as a separate set.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
