An injection-molded plastic kit of the American Grumman A-6E Intruder carrier-borne bomber in 1:48 scale from Kinetic. It is a new mold from 2012 with fine engraved line detail and no flash. The wing can be built spread or folded, the way the machine was parked on deck. The decals are printed by a specialist Italian printer, so they are thin and cover well.
The A-6 Intruder was a US Navy carrier bomber with an unusual layout: the pilot and the navigator sit side by side rather than one behind the other, and the fuselage is therefore wide and stocky. The aircraft was designed to attack ground targets in any weather and at night, a task the fighter types of the day could not handle. The A-6E version received a modern targeting and navigation system and, in the TRAM form, a nose with a turreted electro-optical sensor. The Navy deployed Intruders in Vietnam and over Iraq.
Some parts are held on the sprue by heavy gates, so cut them off carefully with a sharp blade so that the edge of the part does not break away. The windscreen and the canopy are split along the centerline, so the seam has to be filled and painted over, or masked carefully. The engine intake ducts end short, which is a weakness of the mold: it pays to give them attention and paint the inside beforehand. Fit the folded wing last.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
