About product

Avia BH-11 in 1:48 scale, Smer

An injection-molded plastic kit of a Czechoslovak interwar aircraft in 1:48 scale from the Czech manufacturer Smer. The box contains plastic parts, clear parts and decals. It is an older tooling from earlier production released in a new box: the surface texture is raised and only suggested, the interior of the cockpits is very simple (seats, instrument panel, control column, with no floor or further equipment) and the clear parts are thicker. Reckon with cleaning off flash, filling and fine-tuning the joints. Modelers also point out on this older tooling that the actual dimensions of the parts depart slightly from the nominal scale. For a builder that is mainly an opportunity: the model makes a rewarding basis for adding an interior and bracing wires.

The real subject

The Avia BH-11 was a two-seat strut-braced low-wing monoplane by the designer pair Pavel Benes and Miroslav Hajn, which first flew in 1923 and followed on from the older BH-9 type. The structure was largely wooden with plywood covering of the fuselage, and power came from a light Walter radial of around 60 horsepower. The aircraft served as a sporting and training machine, and some of them were taken over by the Czechoslovak army for training and liaison duties. In the mid-1920s the type collected successes in air races and it belongs among the icons of aviation of the First Czechoslovak Republic.

Building and painting tips

First clean the mold seams and the flash off, and only then glue with liquid cement for plastic. The sparse interior can easily be improved with plastic profile, because the floor and the sides of the cockpits are visible once it is assembled. Apply a primer before painting. An airbrush suits it; both an all-green finish and more colorful interwar schemes are typical. Do not forget the bracing wires of the landing gear and the struts, which can be made from thin fishing line and bring the model to life considerably.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Czechoslovak interwar aviation
  • Modelers who enjoy improving simple older toolings
  • Those interested in unconventional subjects outside the mainstream
  • Patient builders willing to fill and fine-tune the fit of the parts

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

There are few parts, but it is an older tooling, so cleaning off flash, filling the joints and fine-tuning the fit lie ahead. A more experienced modeler will manage easily, while a beginner should reckon on patience.

No. The interior is only suggested (seats, instrument panel, control column). That is exactly why the model is a popular basis for building the cockpits out yourself.

A two-seat low-wing monoplane of 1923 by the designers Benes and Hajn, used as a sporting and training aircraft; some of them also served in the Czechoslovak army.

The model is made and sold as 1:48. It is an old tooling, though, and modelers point out that the dimensions of the parts differ slightly from the nominal scale, which is no obstacle for an ordinary display build.
