About product

Corsair Mk.III in 1:48 scale — a Hobby Boss kit

An injection-molded plastic kit of a single-seat carrier-based fighter in 1:48 scale from Hobby Boss. The model is not a toy or a finished product — it is supplied as a set of plastic parts on sprues that have to be cut off, cleaned up, glued together and painted. Decals and assembly instructions are usually part of the box; the specific contents of the package and the number of marking options are given on the box.

The real subject

The Corsair was one of the most distinctive carrier fighters of its day. Its hallmark was the inverted gull wing, with which the designers solved the problem of enough ground clearance for the large propeller and at the same time shortened the landing gear legs. Power came from the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine, which gave the aircraft high speed and a good rate of climb. The designation Corsair Mk.III was used by the Fleet Air Arm for aircraft delivered under wartime supplies; British carrier Corsairs were given clipped wingtips so that they would fit into the lower hangars of the British aircraft carriers of the time. In service the aircraft flew both as a fighter and in the ground attack role with bombs and rockets.

Building and painting tips

Glue the plastic with a thin plastic cement that is drawn into the seam by capillary action — the joints then hold firmly and the surface stays clean. Finish and paint the cockpit and the landing gear bays before you close up the fuselage. With a radial engine it pays to work out the cylinders before gluing them into the cowling, because later you will not reach them. Before painting, spray the whole model with primer, which reveals any remaining sanding marks and evens out the base. Apply a gloss coat before the decals, and once they have dried and been flattened down, weather the model with thin washes into the engraved lines and a subtle highlight of the walkway areas on the wing.

Who the model is for

  • For modelers with experience of building plastic kits in 1:48 scale.
  • For collectors of carrier-based fighters of the Second World War.
  • For anyone interested in the Fleet Air Arm and its versions of American types.
  • For modelers who want to try painting a radial engine and a gull wing.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a classic plastic kit. The parts have to be separated from the sprues, cleaned up, glued with plastic cement and painted. Neither glue nor paints are included in the package.

The Mk.III designation belonged to aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm. British carrier Corsairs had clipped wingtips because of the lower hangars of the British aircraft carriers of the time. Details of the particular kit are given in the enclosed instructions.

The number of parts and the number of schemes on the decal sheet are given on the box and in the enclosed instructions.

Rather not. The 1:48 scale means a larger number of small parts, a cockpit, landing gear bays and a radial engine. We recommend having at least a few simpler plastic models behind you.
