A set of crew figures for the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II in 1:48 scale from the Czech manufacturer Plusmodel. The Phantom was a two-seat machine and without a crew beside the cockpit a model always looks slightly incomplete. A figure also gives the viewer an immediate sense of the real size of the aircraft, which works far more reliably in photographs of a model than any caption.
The flight kit of Cold War combat crews has several unmistakable elements: the helmet with an oxygen mask, the g-suit on the legs, the life vest and the harness. It is by these that you can tell which period a figure belongs to. In 1:48 scale a grown man is about three and a half centimeters tall, so all the detail has to be suggested sparingly.
Wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and glue them with cyanoacrylate. Paint from the top down and start with a darker base so that shadow stays in the folds. Polish the helmet with gloss clear and leave the suit semi-matte. Do the face in three steps: a base tone, a dark wash into the eye sockets and a light touch on the nose and the cheekbones.
The figures are supplied unpainted and unassembled. Paints, glue and the model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
