This is small scenic hardware for a diorama in 1:48 scale, not a model and not a kit. Doors built from card, plastic or wood always look a little unfinished at close range as long as they lack a handle: it is a detail the viewer does not look for but notices the absence of at once. It is exactly such micro-elements that move a diorama from the level of a backdrop to a scene that will stand up to a close-up photograph.
The scale is the distinguishing figure. The set is made for 1:48; the same subject is also made in other scales, so for 1:35 or 1:72 choose the matching version. Hardware is by its nature very small, which makes choosing the right size all the more important: on a handle a mismatch shows at a glance.
On the gates of a workshop or a barn, on the front door of a house, on the door of a cabinet or a crate, in interior scenes and on makeshift shelters. It comes into its own on scratch-built buildings, where the hardware otherwise has to be made from wire and plastic strip.
The parts are small, so work over a tray with a raised edge and use tweezers. Wash the hardware before painting and let it dry, and cut any casting remnants away with a sharp scalpel. It is fitted with a drop of cyanoacrylate glue; set into a hole drilled with a micro drill it holds better and looks more natural than stuck on flat. It is best painted in metal shades, brass, bronze or a dark steel tone, and completed with a thin wash that creates a shadow around the hardware. Polished spots can be suggested with a light rub of graphite or pigment on the exposed edges.
The accessory is supplied unpainted. Paints, glue and other material are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
