An injection-molded plastic kit of the Starfighter in the G form, in a box devoted to the Dutch Air Force. The Kinetic brand builds sets of postwar and present-day combat aircraft with a detailed parts breakdown. The manufacturer states neither the number of parts nor the number of marking options; check the extent of the external stores in the instructions.
The F-104G was the multirole version of the Starfighter developed for European users. Compared with the American forms it received a strengthened structure, larger tail surfaces, better navigation equipment and the ability to carry armament against ground targets, so an interceptor turned into a machine for attack at low altitude. The Netherlands was one of the users and the aircraft served in western Europe for two decades. The type earned its reputation as a demanding machine precisely at low altitudes, where the short wing left little margin.
Finish the cockpit, the engine intakes and the landing gear bays before you close the fuselage up. European machines wore both a metallic sheen and camouflage finishes, so think the sequence through before the primer: a metal surface calls for a perfectly smooth base and a gloss undercoat, while camouflage calls for masking with hard edges. Lay the decals onto a gloss base. Set the wingtip tanks symmetrically, otherwise the model looks twisted when seen from the front.
