The set deals with one particular shortcoming that most injection-molded models share: a wheel molded from two halves carries a mold seam all round its circumference, and cleaning that up necessarily damages the rendering of the tread. The replacement part is cast in one piece and the surface of the tire stays whole. The package is not a model of the aircraft, but an accessory for the builder, who obtains the model separately.
The F-35A Lightning II is the basic version of the American fifth-generation fighter, made for conventional takeoff and landing from hard runways. It differs from the other two versions in being the only one to carry an internal gun and in having neither a lift fan for vertical takeoff nor a strengthened structure for arrested landings on a deck. The design puts the emphasis on reducing the radar signature, so the armament is carried inside the fuselage and the surface is as smooth as possible. A number of European states have brought the aircraft into service and it has become the backbone of their tactical air forces.
Degrease the parts before painting and let them dry thoroughly. Seat the landing gear legs first and only then fit the wheels; that way you can be sure the model stands on all three points. On present-day machines the rims tend to be light and contrast markedly with the tire, so it pays to mask them and spray them separately. A light cast of dust on the lower part of the tire settles the model into its setting.
