The landing gear bay covers 1:48 F-86A Sabre undercarriage covers from Clear Prop Models replace the thick-walled plastic parts with a truer rendition.
Responsibility details are not available.
The item addresses one of the most conspicuous weaknesses of jet fighter models: the doors of the landing gear bays, which in plastic are necessarily thicker than reality warrants. The set is cut for the F-86A type and replaces the original parts with a thinner and more accurate shape. The aircraft as such is sold separately.
The North American F-86 came out of a reworking of a straight-wing project after the designers gained access to the German results of aerodynamic research into swept surfaces. The result was a machine that broke the speed record in 1948 and from 1949 entered service with combat squadrons. The nose leg retracted forward into the fuselage, the main legs toward the centerline of the aircraft, and all the bays were closed by a set of doors whose inner sides tended to be markedly lighter in period photographs than the surrounding skin.
The inner surfaces of the covers are usually painted differently from the outer surface of the aircraft, so it pays to spray them separately and to join them only at the end of the build. A very weak wash will emphasize the edges and rims, and a measured amount of darker patches will then suggest the hydraulic staining that was common on front-line machines.
Paints and the aircraft itself are not included.
