About product

Grumman F8F-1 Bearcat in 1:48 Scale

This injection-molded plastic kit from Hobby Boss represents the Grumman F8F-1 Bearcat carrier fighter, the last and most powerful propeller-driven fighter the company built for the US Navy. The 1:48 scale suits the compact dimensions of the real subject well and the finished model fits into a collection of carrier machines. The box holds a plastic kit to glue and paint.

The real subject

The Bearcat grew out of a simple idea: take the most powerful engine available and wrap the smallest and lightest airframe around it. The result was a short, stocky aircraft with a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine, exceptional rate of climb and agility. It was built so that it could also operate from the smaller decks of escort carriers. It never saw combat in the Second World War, though, because it reached the squadrons at the very end of the war. It stayed in service for a number of postwar years and later became famous as a racing aircraft as well.

Building and painting tips

The short fuselage and the large engine cowling mean that the seating of the engine and its cowling decides the overall impression of the model, so set aside time for it. Finish the cockpit before you close the fuselage and mask the glazing with tape. The uniform dark blue naval finish of the postwar machines looks best when you shade it with light lightening of the surfaces and add highlighting of the engraved lines. A gloss coat under the decals will prevent bubbles, and a matte overcoat will even the surface out. Add the landing gear and the propeller only at the end.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in American carrier aviation
  • Modelers who like compact propeller fighters
  • Collectors of machines of the end of the Second World War and the postwar years
  • Builders of intermediate experience

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Not in combat. It reached the squadrons at the very end of the war and made its name in postwar service.

A Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial, that is the same engine family as the heavier American fighters, but in a much smaller and lighter airframe.

It is manageable with basic experience. The seating of the engine cowling calls for attention.

They are not, the kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
