About product

Halberstadt CL.IV H.F.W. 1:48, a Mirage Hobby plastic kit

An injection-molded plastic kit of the German two-seat Halberstadt CL.IV aircraft in 1:48 from the Polish maker Mirage Hobby. The H.F.W. designation refers to machines from the production of the parent factory Halberstädter Flugzeugwerke, because the type was also built under license at another company and the two versions differed in details. The model is done in a modern tooling with an elaborate engine and internal equipment of both cockpits; the exact contents of the package are given in the instructions.

The real subject

The Halberstadt CL.IV belonged to the CL category, light two-seat aircraft that were originally to serve as escort fighters but in practice made their name mainly as machines for the support of ground troops. The crew consisted of a pilot and a gunner sitting in one roomy cockpit, which made cooperation easier and allowed effective defense of the rear hemisphere. Power came from an inline water-cooled Mercedes engine. Against the older CL.II the CL.IV had reworked tail surfaces and better handling, thanks to which it was agile and tough at low altitude. It appeared on the Western Front in the final year of the war and was used for attacks on ground targets, for escorting reconnaissance aircraft and for defense against enemy ground attack machines. A characteristic feature of these aircraft was the covering with a printed lozenge camouflage pattern.

Building and painting tips

On a biplane, decide in advance how you will handle the struts and the rigging wires; the surest procedure is to spray both wings and the fuselage separately, only then assemble the struts and finally stretch the wires from elastic thread. The cockpit is clearly visible on this type, so it pays to finish it and lift it slightly with a wash before closing the fuselage. The camouflage covering can be handled either with decals, if the package contains them, or with patient spraying through masks; decals are the more feasible route for most builders. Bring out the engine and the exhaust with metallic shades and pigments. You will imitate a laminated wooden propeller with a light base on which you lay darker stripes and seal the whole with a gloss varnish.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in the aviation of the First World War and in German ground attack aircraft
  • Modelers who have experience of building biplanes and of rigging
  • Collectors of less usual types in 1:48
  • Builders who want to try a camouflage covering with a lozenge pattern

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It refers to the maker of the airframe, Halberstädter Flugzeugwerke, that is the parent factory of the type. The Halberstadt CL.IV was also built under license at another company and machines from the two sources differed in details, which is why the boxings are distinguished.

Formally it belonged to the category of light two-seat escort aircraft, but in practice it made its greatest mark in supporting ground troops and attacking targets on the ground in the last year of the war.

A biplane with struts and rigging wires is among the more demanding builds. If you have not built a model like this before, count on a slower pace and on the rigging being done at the very end.

It depends on the particular release, and the contents of the package are given in the instructions. If decals with the covering are not available, the pattern can be sprayed through masks, which is markedly more laborious.
