About product

MH-60L Black Hawk, 1:48, ICM

An injection-molded plastic kit from the Ukrainian maker ICM in 1:48 scale. This is not the ordinary transport Black Hawk: the letter M in the designation stands for Multi-mission / Special Operations — the MH-60L is the version modified for special operations, flown by the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, nicknamed the Night Stalkers. The kit has over 300 parts and offers three marking options for real machines. Crew figures are NOT included in this boxing. For a Black Hawk with a crew straight out of the box, ICM also offers the UH-60A Black Hawk with Crew — but that one is the basic transport version, not a special operations machine. Choose according to what you want to build.

The real subject

The UH-60 Black Hawk is an American multipurpose transport helicopter that replaced the legendary Huey in army service. The MH-60L version is derived from it for special operations: compared with the basic version it carries different equipment — a weather radar in the nose, a FLIR sensor (thermal imaging) and the option of an in-flight refueling system, which greatly extends its range on long night missions. It was MH-60Ls of the 160th Regiment that were committed at Mogadishu in 1993 during the operation that later became widely known as Black Hawk Down; two helicopters were shot down in the course of the action. The machines of the 160th Regiment still serve today in modernized versions.

Building and painting tips

Classic injection-molded plastic — glue it with thin modeling cement for polystyrene. Finish and paint the cargo compartment interior and the cockpit before joining the fuselage, and mask the glazing. The base is a dark flat army green, which takes primer and an airbrush well. Paint the rotor assembly and the blades separately and watch the fragile antennas and sensors — attach them at the very end of the build so you do not break them off while handling. Use a gloss coat under the decals and a matte coat over them. Helicopters tend to be very dirty on the lower fuselage and on the landing gear, so discreet dust pigments and oil streaks on the engine covers go a long way.

Who the model is for

  • For anyone interested in special operations helicopters and the machines of the 160th Regiment
  • For modelers who want the version with radar and FLIR, not the plain transport machine
  • For collectors of modern American equipment in 1:48 scale
  • For those who do not mind buying the figures separately (they are not in the box)

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The MH-60L is the special operations version of the 160th Regiment: it has a weather radar, a FLIR sensor and the option of in-flight refueling, but no crew figures in the box. The UH-60A with Crew is the basic transport version and does include figures. They are two different boxings, so do not mix them up.

It marks a machine for special operations and multi-mission tasks, as opposed to the transport UH. In practice it means different sensors, a radar and the ability to fly long night missions.

They are not. ICM offers them as a separate Black Hawk crew figure set, and they are also part of the UH-60A with Crew boxing.

The kit has over three hundred parts and a rich interior. It is better suited to modelers with some experience; a complete beginner should start with a simpler model.
