About product

1:48 Supermarine Spitfire FR Mk.IXc MJ518 and MK374, No. 414 Squadron RCAF, Aviaeology ADD48009-2X, basic version

A decal sheet aimed at two particular machines, not at national markings in general and not at technical stencils. This is the basic version: according to the manufacturer it contains the markings belonging to these aircraft, but the sheet of national markings for the Spitfire, ADD48C109-1, is not in the package. The manufacturer recommends it to builders who spray their roundels and rudder stripes through masks. Anyone who wants the roundels as decals should look for the full version ADD48009-2, which the manufacturer lists separately. The sheet covers MJ518 with the code O and the nickname Helen II and MK374 with the code R.

The real subject

The Spitfire FR Mk.IXc was the tactical reconnaissance version of the fighter with the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. It was given an obliquely mounted camera in the side of the fuselage behind the cockpit and kept its armament all the while, so the pilot could photograph and defend himself at the same time. No. 414 Squadron RCAF flew tactical reconnaissance with it over north-western Europe within No. 39 Wing in the last year of the war. MJ518 with the nickname Helen II flew with F/L Mike Carr in the second half of 1944. It was on MK374 with the code R that S/L Gordon Wonnacott became an ace, when on January 1, 1945 during Operation Bodenplatte he shot down three German aircraft.

Application and painting tips

Apply the decals onto a dried gloss coat and cut the items off one at a time. Because this version does not contain the national markings, plan the roundels and the rudder stripes in advance. Set the markings according to the instructions and according to a photograph of the machine. Once it is dry, varnish the whole thing according to the scheme.

Who the sheet is for

  • Modelers who spray their national markings through masks
  • Builders who already have Spitfire roundels from another source
  • Anyone interested in Canadian tactical reconnaissance over north-western Europe

This is an accessory for a model, not a kit. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
