An injection-molded plastic kit of a Viking ship in 1:50 scale from the German manufacturer Revell. The set comes in the Model Set edition: alongside the sprues with the parts, the decals and the instructions the manufacturer also adds the basic paints, a brush and cement for polystyrene. The large 1:50 scale means that the finished model is a solid piece for a display case and that its shapes read well.
Viking ships are among the most distinctive vessels of the European Middle Ages. They were built from overlapping oak planks nailed over one another, which gave the hull flexibility and a shallow draft. A single mast carried a square sail, steering was done with an oar on the starboard quarter, and in a calm or on a river the crew rowed. It was precisely the shallow draft that allowed the Vikings to sail far inland along rivers and to pull the ship up onto a beach without a harbor. The shields along the gunwale are familiar from period depictions and from the later image of the Norse seafarers.
Bring the hull planking to life: over the base wood shade lay a darker wash that runs into the grooves between the planks, and bring out the edges with a dry brush. The shields and the sail are a rewarding part of the build; transfer the decals onto a smooth gloss base and press them down from the middle out to the edges. String the rigging with thin thread only after varnishing. The model shows best on a simple wooden base or in a base that stands for the water surface.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. In the Model Set edition the basic paints, a brush and glue are included in the package; other accessories are not.
