Aber 1:700 photo-etched Royal Navy doors will replace a flat plastic suggestion with fine watertight doors, in the 1st choice form.
Responsibility details are not available.
A photo-etched set from the Polish maker Aber in 1:700 scale with ship doors following Royal Navy practice. It is not a kit of a ship but a detail accessory. The doors are etched from thin brass sheet with the frame and the fittings drawn in, so on the wall of a superstructure they create genuine relief instead of mere engraving in plastic. The 1st choice designation sets this version of the fret apart from the second variant in the maker's range.
Watertight doors are everywhere on ship superstructures and their shape differed from navy to navy. The British form has a characteristic rectangular frame with clips around the edge. In 1:700 scale, kits usually suggest them only shallowly or leave them entirely flat. Gluing on etched doors gives the walls of the superstructures depth, and when painted they naturally catch both shadows and later weathering.
It is a good idea to sand away the original plastic suggestion of the doors before gluing, so that the new part sits on a flat surface. Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard mat and handle them with fine-tipped tweezers. Glue them with cyanoacrylate glue applied with the tip of a wire — a drop from the tube is too much in this scale. Degrease the brass, spray it with a base coat for metal and paint it together with the superstructure; a fine dark wash will then draw out the outline of the frame.
This is an accessory photo-etched set, not a standalone model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
