About product

Masking set 1:72 A5M Claude, early version (Clear Prop Models)

A set of pre-cut self-adhesive masks in 1:72 scale, cut according to the name from yellow kabuki paper and shaped for the kit from the same manufacturer. It serves to make the transitions of the paint and the glazing frames come out with a sharp edge without slow work with tape. The version is intended for the early production of the aircraft, which differs from the later machines in the shape of the canopy and in details of the cowling, so a mask from another variant in the same range need not fit it.

The real subject

The Mitsubishi A5M, under the Allied designation Claude, was the first production Japanese carrier-based low-wing fighter. It replaced biplanes and brought an all-metal design with fixed, aerodynamically faired landing gear and a radial engine. The early batches were built with an open and with an enclosed cockpit, and various shapes of canopy were tried on them, which is the main mark of recognition for modelers against the later machines.

Usage tips

Degrease the glazing and let it dry. Lift the individual masks off with tweezers, lay them on dry, check the position and then press the center and the edges down. With fixed landing gear it pays to think about the order of painting, so that the masked areas stay accessible. Spray the paint in thin coats at right angles to the edge of the mask. Take it off while the paint is still tacky, and lead the edge back over itself when peeling rather than up away from the surface. Store the rest of the sheet flat and out of direct light.

Who the set is for

  • builders of prewar Japanese fighters in 1:72
  • modelers who want sharp cockpit frames
  • those who paint with an airbrush
  • anyone interested in the early version of the A5M

The package holds masks only. The kit, paints and glue are not included.

FAQ

The early batches differ from the later machines above all in the arrangement of the cockpit and in details of the cowling. That is exactly why this set has a cut of its own and cannot be swapped for the set for another variant.

It is not. This is a masking set for a kit you have already bought.

The set is cut for the kit from the same manufacturer. On a kit from another brand the outlines need not match, so check this before ordering.

Shortly after spraying, while the paint is still tacky. Peel the edge back over itself at an angle rather than straight up, which lowers the risk of tearing the paint away.
