The Aviaeology ADD72024-1X decal sheet in 1:72 scale carries the markings of three particular Canso A machines of 162 (BR) Squadron RCAF, including aircraft 9754 from Hornell's action. This is the Basic Set version, that is, without the sheet of national insignia.

A decal sheet with the markings of three particular machines: Canso A 9754, 9759 and 9767 of 162 (BR) Squadron RCAF, all from Boeing Canada production. It is not a set of national insignia or a sheet of technical stencil markings - its content is the individual markings of these three aircraft. The manufacturer issues the sheet in several versions and this is the Basic Set: the individual markings yes, the sheet of national insignia no. The Full Set version has the manufacturer's part number ADD72024-1 and holds in the same package the additional sheet of Canadian national insignia ADD72C124-2. The Basic Set is for the modeler who masks and sprays the roundels and the fin stripe.
Canso A was the Canadian designation for the amphibious Catalina PBY-5A; it was built under license by Boeing Canada and Canadian Vickers. 162 Squadron RCAF operated them under the command of Coastal Command from Iceland and from Wick in Scotland and patrolled against submarines. Each of the three machines on the sheet has an action from 1944 behind it: 9754 Mary K. sank U-1225, 9759 damaged U-300 and 9767 sank U-342. During the action of machine 9754 fire from the submarine set the aircraft alight, the crew had to come down at sea and the pilot, F/L David Hornell, did not survive it; he received the Victoria Cross posthumously.
Decals are not applied with modeling cement. They go onto dried gloss varnish, are seated with water and a decal fixer and, on broken surfaces, with a decal softener, so that the film follows the rivets and panel lines. Cut the individual markings out close to the artwork. Compare the finish with a photograph of the machine you are building.
This is an accessory for a model, not a kit. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
