About product

National insignia for Canso A aircraft from Boeing Canada production - Aviaeology 1:72

A sheet from the Colours and Codes series with the national insignia for the Canso A in Royal Canadian Air Force service, limited to machines built at Boeing Canada. It is not the markings of one named aircraft or a sheet of maintenance stencils - these are marks of nationality for a machine the modeler chooses. The manufacturer sells the national insignia separately from the sheets with the individual markings of particular aircraft precisely so that the modeler can add them as needed or replace those from the kit. Check the extent and the sizes of the insignia on this sheet on the box.

The real subject

Canso A was the Canadian designation for the amphibious version of the Catalina PBY-5A. Consolidated was not the only builder: Boeing Canada and Canadian Vickers also made it under license, and machines from the different production sources differed in detail. The Royal Canadian Air Force put them on patrol and anti-submarine flights off the coast of Canada, from Iceland and from Scotland. Machines from Consolidated and from Boeing Canada could fly side by side in the same squadron - 162 Squadron is a good example. So check where the airframe of your subject came from.

Application tips

Decals are not applied with modeling cement. They go onto dried gloss varnish, are seated with water and a decal fixer and, on broken surfaces, with a decal softener, so that the film follows the rivets and panel lines. Cut the individual markings out close to the artwork. Lay the roundels on dry first and check the size against a photograph of the machine.

Who the sheet is for

  • The modeler building a Canso A from Boeing Canada production
  • Replacing inaccurately colored or damaged insignia from the kit
  • The modeler adding to a sheet with the individual markings of a machine

This is an accessory for a model, not a kit. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
