About product

Focke-Wulf Fw 189A Owls over the Eastern Front in 1:72 scale — Special Hobby

The Focke-Wulf Fw 189A from Special Hobby is a plastic kit in 1:72 scale released as the themed edition Owls over the Eastern Front (the aircraft's nickname Uhu means eagle owl). The point of this release is a decal sheet focused on machines from the Eastern Front: it holds two Luftwaffe aircraft, one captured machine in Soviet colors and one postwar aircraft of the Norwegian air force from the northern sector of the front. The kit comes from the injection mold of Special Hobby.

The real subject

The Fw 189 Uhu was a tactical reconnaissance aircraft of utterly unique layout: two tail booms with a fully glazed crew nacelle between them. Thanks to that the crew of three had a view in practically every direction — the aircraft earned the reputation of a flying eye. It was agile, tough and exceptionally hard to shoot down, which is why the Luftwaffe deployed it mainly on the Eastern Front for observation, correcting artillery fire and liaison with ground units. A production note: besides Germany the Fw 189 was also built in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia — in the Aero factory in Prague (and further in occupied France in Bordeaux). Hundreds of the machines built came from the Prague production.

Building and painting tips

Use a thin plastic cement; with limited-run molds count on a higher share of handwork — the mating surfaces sometimes need sanding and dry-fitting. The key to the result is the extensive glazing of the nacelle: paint and finish the interior before closing it up, mask the clear parts carefully and glue them with a cement for canopies (it will not fog them). Lay down primer, then spray the gray-green upper camouflage and the light undersides with an airbrush; on winter machines of the Eastern Front a white overspray was used, and it suits being rubbed back on the edges. A gloss coat before the decals, a matte clear coat after them and a fine wash into the engraved lines.

Who the model is for

  • For lovers of unconventional layouts — a twin-boom aircraft with a glazed nacelle
  • For collectors of Eastern Front and Luftwaffe subjects in 1:72
  • For modelers who value decals including a captured Soviet and a postwar Norwegian machine
  • For Czech modelers — the Fw 189 was built in Aero in Prague as well
  • For more advanced beginners and intermediate builders — the kit calls for patience with the glazing

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The nickname of the aircraft was Uhu, that is eagle owl. This release is themed on machines from the Eastern Front and the decal sheet holds two Luftwaffe aircraft, one captured Soviet and one postwar Norwegian machine.

It has two tail booms with a fully glazed crew nacelle between them. The view in every direction made it an ideal reconnaissance aircraft — it was nicknamed the flying eye.

Yes. Besides German production the Fw 189 was also built in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, in the Aero factory in Prague, and likewise in occupied France.

Rather for the somewhat more experienced. The extensive glazing of the nacelle calls for careful masking and limited-run kits usually need more work on the mating surfaces than mainstream molds.
