About product

Aviaeology AOD72C08: national insignia for the Hawker Typhoon Mk.IB, 1:72

This is a sheet of national insignia for one type. Code letters and technical stencils are not on it; Aviaeology has separate sheets for those. The sheet covers the form of the insignia from May 1942 to January 1945, that is, up to the moment when a white ring was added to the roundels on the upper wing surface. The manufacturer gives two different sizes of roundel for the upper wing surface, because they differed between individual machines. Behind the brand stands the Canadian SkyGrid Studio, and the part number is AOD72C08.

The real subject

The Hawker Typhoon Mk.IB was a British single-engine machine with a Napier Sabre engine, at first intended as an interceptor. What it proved itself at, however, was the fighter-bomber role: it attacked ground targets with rockets and bombs and was among the most prominent machines of the tactical air force in northwestern Europe. In 1942 it flew with the RAF and its insignia changed over the course of its service, so for a faithful model what decides is precisely the period into which you place the build.

Application tips

Before the decals, coat the surfaces with gloss varnish so that the carrier film is not visible, and once dry give the whole a matte coat. Measure out the roundels on the upper wing surface first, because the sheet offers two sizes and the choice follows from the machine you are building. Large insignia settle better onto curved surfaces when the decal is warmed and pressed down with absorbent paper.

Who the set is for

  • builds of the Typhoon Mk.IB in the period from May 1942 to January 1945
  • modelers for whom the decals from the kit are not enough or have yellowed
  • combining with a sheet of squadron codes or technical stencils
  • placing a model faithfully at a particular date

This is an accessory for a model, not a kit. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
