A kit of the Miles M.57 Aerovan in 1:72 scale from the Ukrainian maker Mikromir, injection-molded plastic from a short-run mold. It is one of the most oddly shaped transport aircraft of all, so it stands out in a display case even among large machines.
The Aerovan was a British twin-engine high-wing monoplane for short routes, designed by Miles Aircraft as a cheap freight aircraft for civil and military use alike. The structure was of bonded plywood, the landing gear was nosewheel and non-retractable, and the tail carried three vertical surfaces - a fin and two end plates. Two pilots sat at the front under a large transparent canopy over the nacelle; the rear of the fuselage was formed by large two-leaf doors, on account of which the boom to the tail was carried high. The aircraft lifted a load of up to one ton, that is, even a motor car. The prototype flew in January 1945, series production began in 1946 and ended at the close of 1947 with the maker's bankruptcy; 48 were made. Most served with civil carriers, a few machines with the Israeli Air Force, and two were evaluated by the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
The triple tail surface on a high boom is the most vulnerable place on the model - glue it on a flat base and check the symmetry before the glue hardens. Dry-fit the short-run parts. Mask the large cabin glazing and glue it on only after painting. Civil carrier schemes tend to be in a gloss or metallic finish, which needs a smooth primer coat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
