A short-run injection-molded plastic kit of the American reconnaissance jet RF-84F Thunderflash in 1:72 scale from Sword. The mold dates from 2018. This release carries decals for the US Air Force, the Luftwaffe, and the Norwegian and French air forces. Besides the gray plastic, the box holds clear parts and resin-cast seats.
The RF-84F was the photo-reconnaissance derivative of the F-84F Thunderstreak fighter-bomber. Unlike it, it had no intake in the nose — that was reserved for the reconnaissance cameras — and the air therefore reached the engine through two intakes in the wing roots. In the 1950s and 1960s the aircraft became the standard tactical reconnaissance type of the American forces and of a number of allied air forces in Europe, where it arrived under military aid.
A short-run mold means that all the large assemblies have to be tried dry first and the joints glued only afterwards; after gluing, filling and sanding is usually needed. Wash the resin parts clean of any mold release agent and glue them with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). A smooth unpainted metal surface is usual on this type and comes out best from a metallic lacquer applied with an airbrush over a perfectly smooth base; every scratch shows through a metal shade.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
