An injection-molded plastic model of the German heavy tank destroyer Elefant Sd.Kfz.184 in 1:72 scale from the brand Trumpeter. It is a massive tracked vehicle with a fixed superstructure and a long 8.8 cm gun; according to the manufacturer, besides the plastic parts the box also contains photo-etched parts and a length of wire for finer detail. It builds up as a classic plastic kit.
The Elefant was a heavy tank destroyer built on the chassis of the unsuccessful Porsche prototype of the Tiger tank. It carried the powerful 8.8 cm PaK 43 gun in a fixed armored superstructure, which destroyed Allied tanks at long range. Originally the vehicle bore the name Ferdinand and in that form it was committed at the battle of Kursk in 1943. After a rebuild in which it received a hull machine gun, a commander's cupola and the anti-magnetic Zimmerit coating, it was renamed Elefant in 1944. In that later form it served, among other places, in Italy and on the Eastern Front.
With this heavy vehicle it pays to assemble and paint the running gear with the wheels and tracks first, and to close the hull and fit the superstructure only afterwards. Glue the plastic parts with thin modeling cement for plastic, and the photo-etched parts and the wire with cyanoacrylate glue. Apply primer before painting and lay the three-color camouflage on with an airbrush in thin coats. A dark wash into the details, drybrushing of the edges and pigments for mud effects on the running gear will give a convincing look.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
