An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet Object 268 self-propelled gun in 1:72 scale from the manufacturer Trumpeter. The 1:72 scale suits vehicles where you want to build whole collections or a diorama and have no display case for large pieces: the model takes up a fraction of the room compared with 1:35 and still carries the main shapes of the real machine.
The Object 268 was a Soviet heavy tank destroyer prototype of the second half of the 1950s. It was based on the chassis of the T-10 heavy tank and carried a 152 mm gun in a fixed, non-traversing casemate set back toward the rear of the hull. The layout without a rotating turret allowed a markedly more powerful barrel to be installed than could have been fitted in a turret on the same chassis, in exchange for limited traverse: aiming was handled by turning the whole vehicle. The designation Object plus a number is an internal development index of the design bureau, not an army type designation. The machine never entered series production and it remained at the prototype stage.
With vehicles it pays to finish the running gear before the hull is closed up, because once the superstructure is glued on the road wheels are hard to reach. Spray the tracks with a base coat separately first and fit them only after the chassis has been painted. Glue the long barrel while checking its alignment, because on a model it shows at once when it points a degree off. Paint over a primer and lighten the base shade slightly on the upper surfaces, so that the model does not look flat. Keep the weathering restrained: a dark wash into the recesses and engraved lines, and dust and mud effects with pigment working upwards from the running gear. In 1:72 scale less is more, because a heavy layer of pigment wipes out a fine molding.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
