About product

FORE ART R1902: Westland Sea King AEW.2, 1:72

The kit captures the Sea King in the airborne early warning version, that is the machine with the characteristic inflatable radar cover on a swiveling arm at the side of the fuselage. The manufacturer lists plastic parts, clear parts, 3D printed parts and decals in the package. The scale is 1:72 and the manufacturer's part number is FORE ART R1902.

The real subject

When the last large British aircraft carrier was retired in 1978, the carrier-borne early warning aircraft disappeared with it. The Falklands War in 1982 exposed that gap very harshly: the British task force lacked an eye that would detect low-flying machines before the ships' radar did. Westland therefore began converting two Sea King HAS Mk 2 helicopters in May 1982 and fitted them with a Searchwater radar on a swiveling arm with an inflatable cover, which was lowered in flight and raised before landing. Both machines flew within a matter of weeks, formed D Flight of 824 Naval Air Squadron and sailed aboard HMS Illustrious. They reached the South Atlantic only after the fighting had ended, however. The version proved itself and became the basis for later production machines.

Building and painting tips

The radar cover and its arm are the main visual feature, so it pays to glue and align them before closing the fuselage and to check that the arm sits at the correct angle. Wash the 3D printed parts free of release agent residue and glue them with cyanoacrylate; ordinary plastic cement will not bond them. Naval gray is sprayed in thin coats, and salt deposits and faded areas around the exhausts show up well on it.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of British naval equipment and of the Falklands conflict
  • modelers of helicopters in 1:72 scale
  • builds where the aim is a less usual version of a well-known machine
  • more advanced builders, because of the 3D printed parts

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.
