This is a book, not a kit. This title is volume number 20 of the flagship Airframe and Miniature series of the British publisher Valiant Wings Publishing. The volumes in the series are divided into a part on the airframe (development, variants, technical description, detail photographs and camouflage) and a modeling part (available kits, built models, surveys of accessories, masks and decals). The author is Richard A. Franks. It takes in the wartime service: the Avro Manchester and the Lancaster B Mk I, II, III and VI with the RAF.
The Manchester was a twin-engine bomber whose neck was broken by its unreliable Rolls-Royce Vulture engines. Avro rebuilt it around four Merlins and the Lancaster came about — the machine with the longest bomb bay in the RAF, able to carry everything from the four thousand pound bomb to the largest British ordnance of the war. For want of Merlins the Mk II version was given Bristol Hercules radial engines, the Mk III license-built Merlins from Packard, and the Mk VI high-altitude engines with broad-blade propellers for the marker squadrons. The Lancaster also flew the best known British raid of the war, the attack on the German dams.
For modelers of the wartime Lancasters and of the Manchester. Watch out for the pair of volumes: this is part 1 on wartime service, while postwar service and the Lancastrian transport are dealt with by a separate part 2, volume number 21.
