The set from the British brand PERRY Miniatures holds forty multi-part figures of hard plastic, built on fourteen torso shapes and supplemented by four fully armored command figures. From the parts you can build up to eighteen men with bills and up to thirty archers. The command group comes with extra arms, so two standard bearers or trumpeters can be made from it. The box holds fifty-six heads, eight colored flags and bases for the units.

The real subject

The Wars of the Roses were a fight between two branches of the same house for the English throne and lasted more than three decades. The core of the armies was not made up of knights but of free men called into the field: archers with the longbow, whose shooting had already decided the day at Crécy and Agincourt, and men-at-arms with bills, that is, a long polearm with a point and a hook. The flags included refer to the battles of Wakefield, Towton and Bosworth.

Building and painting tips

The parts are of hard polystyrene, so they glue with ordinary liquid cement for plastic. Assemble the figures on their bases first and spray them with primer only after that, preferably a dark one, because that creates the shadow in the folds straight away. Lay the areas of color on thinly and lighten them gradually on the raised places. A dark wash and a matte varnish unify the finished paintwork, and the varnish also protects the figure during play and carrying.
