A photographic publication from the publisher Wingleader, volume number 40 of the Photo Archive series, author Andrew Thomas, 72 pages in a softcover binding, text in English. It is not a kit. For this volume the publisher builds on its own collection of period press material and on rare private photographs on which the squadron codes are legible.
The Battle was a single-engine light bomber with a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine and a crew of three, which at the end of the thirties looked like a great step forward. The war found it already outclassed, however. In France in 1940 it flew a few attacks with catastrophic losses and soon disappeared from the front line. It worked out the second half of its life outside Europe: as a training machine for training Commonwealth aircrew, as a target tug and in overseas service. And legible squadron codes are exactly what modelers most often lack for faithful markings.
The book is for a modeler who is building the Battle and is looking for evidence for a particular machine, its codes and its colors, whether in the French campaign or in the later training role. It will also serve a reader who wants to understand how fast a whole generation of bombers aged in 1940. Do not expect technical drawings with a photographic archive, as its strength is the image and the caption.
