Open-cell foam polystyrene, 6 mm from Green Stuff World: a thin board for facings and fine relief.
Responsibility details are not available.
A thin board of foam polystyrene with an open cell structure, six millimeters thick and measuring two hundred by three hundred millimeters. The material has a low memory, so it keeps the impression of a tool as well as of a texture. At this thickness it is not used for bulk but for surfaces: from a thin board you make wall facings, paving, brick surfaces and fine relief, which are then glued onto a load-bearing structure.
The board is cut with a sharp knife, and at this thickness one or two passes are enough. The pattern is pressed in with a texture roller or scribed with a tool, and because the material is soft, it goes substantially more easily than into hard plastic. The surface has to be sealed with a protective coat before painting, or the foam will soak the paint up. Solvent-based paints and sprays dissolve foam polystyrene, which is why water-thinnable products are the ones for it. The manufacturer gives seventy-five degrees as the highest safe working temperature.
For builders of dioramas and buildings, for modelers who make their own facings and paving, and for anyone who needs a thin material that a texture can be pressed into.
The dust that arises while cutting and sanding is dangerous, so work with respiratory protection and in a ventilated space. Store the material out of the reach of children and away from sources of heat.
