Responsibility details are not available.
A plastic kit of the American twin-engine long-range photo-reconnaissance aircraft from A&A Models. The subject is the first of the two prototypes built, which the box identifies by the serial number 47-0155. You can tell it by the propellers: each engine carried a pair of four-blade propellers on one shaft, eight blades in all. The other kit from the same brand captures the second prototype with ordinary propellers, so the propellers are the main thing that tells them apart.
The XF-11 grew out of Howard Hughes's proposal for a fast high-altitude photo-reconnaissance aircraft with a twin-boom tail and a crew of two. The US Army Air Forces ordered a hundred in 1943, but canceled the contract and only two prototypes were completed. Each was powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major, a four-row air-cooled twenty-eight-cylinder radial with a takeoff rating of three thousand horsepower. The first prototype flew on July 7, 1946 with Hughes at the controls and crashed the same day in Beverly Hills, where it destroyed a house. Hughes survived with serious injuries. The sources differ on the cause: the investigation blamed the pilot and Hughes blamed the rear of the two propellers. The second prototype was given ordinary propellers.
A span of over thirty meters means a long wing even in 1:72, so assemble on a flat surface and check the dihedral. The two propellers on one shaft have to run true to each other. The polished metal finish of the prototype needs a perfectly smooth base: fill it, work up through the finer grits and spray the metallic shades in thin coats.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
