About product

Engine of the A/MH-6J Little Bird helicopter in 1:35 scale

A three-dimensionally printed resin accessory for a model: the separate power unit of the light A/MH-6J Little Bird helicopter, from the Toucan Model brand. It is not a kit of the helicopter or a part of it for flight, but a replacement engine meant to take the place of the simplified plastic part on a finished model. The fine printing captures details that injection-molded plastic cannot reach, and it therefore pays off where the engine bay is open and on view.

The real subject

The Little Bird is the military form of a small helicopter derived from the MD 500 type series. A/MH-6J machines serve American special forces for inserting and extracting small groups, for reconnaissance and, in the armed version, for fire support as well, and their advantages are low weight, small dimensions and the ability to land almost anywhere. They are powered by a single Allison 250-C30 turboshaft engine, mounted behind the cabin and clearly visible on the real machine, because the cowling tends to be left open both during maintenance and in the field.

Fitting and painting tips

Wash the printed resin first in warm water with detergent, so that no residue from printing is left on the surface. Cut the supports off with a sharp knife or a saw and sand the surfaces; protect your breathing when sanding. It is glued exclusively with cyanoacrylate glue, as ordinary cement for plastic will not join resin. A primer coat is mandatory. Paint the engine first in metallic shades, then darken it with a wash worked in so that the edges stand out, and add traces of oil and soot.

Who the set is for

  • modelers who build the Little Bird with the engine bay open
  • anyone interested in gaining experience with printed resin
  • collectors of American special forces equipment

This is an accessory for a model, not a kit. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
