A carbide scribing tool in a red version, from DSPIAE. The PRO version from the newer line with a polished blade surface.
Responsibility details are not available.
A tool for restoring and creating panel lines on a model. It is scribed by pulling toward you and the material is cut by an edge rather than by a point as with a needle, so the line has a flat bottom and a constant width along its whole length. The version belongs to the newer line with a polished blade surface that slips and skips less; that forgives a beginner more than the older design. The color coding of the handle helps pick the tool out from the others on the bench.
Make the first stroke without pressure, only to create a guide groove; the following strokes deepen it. Never add pressure, the cutting edge should do the work. Sweep the removed material away with a brush as you go, otherwise it gets pressed back into the line under the tool. Run a fine abrasive paper over the finished engraving at the end so that the burr on its edges disappears.
A tungsten-based sintered material holds its edge for a very long time, but it is brittle and sideways levering will break it. Wipe the tool after work and store it so that the point rests against nothing. The model, paints and a ruler are not included in the package.
If you only scribe occasionally, the older version will do; a polished blade shows its worth mainly on long strokes across a smooth surface, where an ordinary tool likes to run out of the groove. Anyone who does paneling regularly will notice the difference on the first model.
