About product

Ten fighter aces on a single sheet

The selection opens with the Mk.I of serial number R6993, which flew with No. 610 Squadron under S/L J. Ellis in 1940. It goes on with a trio of Mk.VB versions: the Australian AB972 of No. 452 Squadron RAAF with F/L B. E. F. Finucane, EN824 of No. 453 Squadron RAAF with F/L J. W. Yarra, and EN951, on which the Polish pilot J. Zumbach fought with No. 303 Squadron.

The Mediterranean and the late versions

The second half is made up of machines from the southern theater. The Mk.VC JK116 belonged to S/L J. F. Edwards of No. 274 Squadron in Italy in 1944, and JK228 flew with W/C B. Drake at Krendi Wing on Malta in 1943. The Mk.IXC version is represented by ML214 of S/L J. Plagis of No. 126 Squadron, EN473 of S/L D. E. Kingaby of No. 122 Squadron and EN530 of W/C C. F. Gray of No. 322 Wing in Sicily. The last item is the Mk.VIII MT685 of W/C R. E. Barry of No. 244 Wing in Italy in 1945.

Who the sheet is for

The selection deliberately mixes production versions, so that a single sheet covers both the early period and the end of the war. Alongside the national insignia, the subjects carry the personal markings and the scores of the individual pilots, details that set a build apart from the boxed version at once. The sheet is part of a five-part series whose other parts cover further pilots. It is applied the ordinary wet way over gloss varnish, and the joins are pulled down with a decal softener.

It pays to decide in advance which subject you will use, because the individual machines differ in the shape of the exhausts and of the canopy as well. The serial numbers given with the items make it easier to track down period photographs, since it is by exactly these that aircraft are held in archives. The remaining options stay in reserve for another build.
