A decal sheet with ten sets of markings for the Spitfires of successful fighter pilots, 1:72 scale. The second part of a series that runs through the versions from the Mk.I to the Mk.IX.
Responsibility details are not available.
The sheet gathers the markings of aircraft at whose controls sat pilots with a long list of victories. It opens with the Spitfire Mk.I with which Brian Lane led his unit in 1940 and goes on through the Mk.VA, Mk.VB and Mk.VC versions to the Mk.IXC of 1943. Geographically the selection reaches from British airfields through Malta and Algeria to Italy and Australia.
Side by side here you meet the personal markings of wing commanders, Hugh Dundas or Clive Caldwell for instance, and machines of the Australian squadrons fighting over the Pacific. For the builder that means ten different camouflage schemes and a chance to build one version several times and differently every time.
The printing is rich, with good coverage even on the light code letters, and the carrier film is thin, so that once dry it practically vanishes. The best result comes from the classic procedure: gloss varnish as the ground, the decal into water at room temperature, positioning in place, a softener and finally a matte overcoat that unifies the joins.
Get the Spitfire kit itself separately, as the sheet covers the markings only. It pays to compare in advance whether the model you choose matches the given version, because the differences between the Mk.V and the Mk.IX are plain on the cowling and on the exhausts.
On machines serving in the Mediterranean, count on a sand shade on the upper surfaces and on pronounced wear along the leading edges, while the British examples of 1940 stayed in the two-color green and brown finish. A different camouflage under the same sheet is the quickest way to liven a display case up.
