This item is neither a kit nor an airplane model. It is a masking set from Clear Prop Models in 1:72 scale, intended for the kit of the American Vultee P-66 Vanguard fighter from Dora Wings. The masks are cut from flexible yellow masking paper (kabuki), which adapts well to the curved canopy, holds in place and leaves no adhesive behind. They take the place of laboriously cutting tape with a scalpel directly on the model - and especially in the small 1:72 scale, where the frames are only a few tenths of a millimeter wide, that is the difference between a clean and a smeared cockpit.

Why the Vanguard in particular

The Vultee P-66 Vanguard was an American single-engine fighter with a radial engine that reached the fighting by a roundabout route. It was originally built to an order for Sweden (hence the J10 designation); after the export ban the British took it over as the Vanguard Mk.1, and in the end most of the machines ended up in China, where Chinese pilots flew them against the Japanese. It is precisely that variety - American, Swedish, British and Chinese designations for one type - that makes the Vanguard a rewarding subject with unusual color schemes. Use

• Wash and degrease the glazing before masking; stick the masks onto a dry surface and press the edges down with a blunt point.
• Spray the paint with an airbrush in thin coats - a heavy coat creeps under the edge of the mask.
• Spray the frames in the interior shade first and only then in the outer camouflage; the transition then shows nowhere.
• Take the masks off soon after the paint has dried, with tweezers or the point of a scalpel.
• Offcuts of the masking paper come in handy for masking wheels or the edges of camouflage.
