A Portuguese twenty-liter can in 1:48 scale, ten pieces in the package. A small object that gives an airfield apron or a vehicle a lived-in dimension.
Responsibility details are not available.
Reduced to one forty-eighth, the transport can measures barely seven millimeters. The viewer no longer makes out the individual ribs, but reads the shape and above all the number at once. That is exactly why it pays to bet on a group at this size: one lone piece disappears, while ten of them lined up against a wall create the impression of a supply point.
1:48 is the home scale of aircraft, so the set finds its use mainly on the airfield apron — by a tanker truck, beside an ammunition rack, at a group of mechanics or simply stacked on a tarpaulin. It serves just as well on the roof of an off-road vehicle, on a trailer or as ballast in the cargo bed of a truck.
Handling. Parts this size are not moved with fingers. A wooden stick with a drop of glue on the end works well, or tweezers with smoothed jaws, so that the part does not fly away.
Painting in bulk. Stick the whole batch onto double-sided tape and spray them all at once. You save time and the shade stays uniform across the group, which matters more on a repeated object than on a single piece.
How much wear. At this scale fine scratches look pointless, but a darker recessed shadow along the edges and a light touch of dust from below can work wonders. With figures the rule is simple: brace a can carried in the hand against the palm, otherwise it looks as if it were floating.
The last piece of advice concerns the arrangement. Cans lined up flush look like goods in a display window. Turn a few pieces a different way, leave one lying on its side, and the whole group immediately gains in credibility.
