About product

Madworks, soft sanding sponge in 360 grit

A flexible sanding sponge from the soft sponge range of the Taiwanese brand Madworks. The 360 grit belongs to the coarser part of the span: it takes material fast and is used at the start of sanding, still ahead of the finer coarsenesses. The soft carrier foam gives with the shape of the part, so the sponge follows a cowling, a rounded cover or a fuselage and does not sand flat facets into a domed surface the way a hard sanding pad does. The sponge can be cut into smaller pieces and so reach places a whole one will not fit.

Use

  • Removing gate remnants and flash after a part is cut from the sprue
  • Leveling flash on seams and marks from the mold parting line
  • Coarse leveling of cured putty before a finer sponge comes along
  • Coarser sanding of harder parts, where a fine sponge only slides
  • A cut-off strip for grooves and for places between details

Who the sponge is for

For modelers who build injection-molded kits as well as resin parts and begin sanding on a rounded surface. After the 360 grit you need to carry on through coarsenesses around 600 and beyond, otherwise the scratches will stay visible even under paint. The 360 grit is, on the other hand, needlessly coarse for a surface that is already going under primer, and on thin parts it takes material faster than you expect. Keep the pressure light, therefore, and check the surface as you go.

Do not inhale sanding dust from plastic and resin, wipe the surface as you go and ventilate during longer work; with resin a mask is always in order. Do not leave the sponge in solvent or in glue.

FAQ

For the start of sanding: gate remnants, flash on seams, marks from the mold parting line and coarse leveling of putty. It takes material fast, so for a finished surface before paint it is already too coarse.

Coarsenesses around 600 for general leveling and then 1200 and finer for the finish. Anyone who skips the intermediate steps will see the scratches from the coarse pass even under paint.

Soft foam gives and follows a curve, so no flat facets arise on a domed surface. For flat surfaces and sharp edges, paper on a hard sanding pad is better.

Yes. A cut-off narrow strip reaches into a groove or between details where a whole sponge will not fit, and the remainder stays usable for large areas.
