A sheet of decals from the maker Studio27 in 1:24 scale. Be careful: it is NOT a kit, you will not find a single plastic part inside. What you get are water-slide markings, that is sponsor logos, colored graphics and the race number, for one particular car. The model of the car itself, that is the Heller Citroën DS3 WRC kit, has to be obtained separately; the sheet is made for precisely that one.
A kit in the box offers only one or two marking variants. But a rally car looked different at every event: different sponsors, different graphics, a different race number. Anyone who builds a particular car from a particular rally needs exactly the right sheet. This one belongs to the car from Rally Italy 2012. Other sheets for the DS3 WRC exist as well, so one kit will do for a whole collection of different cars.
Rallying is not a circuit. It is run on closed public roads and forest tracks, in rain and in dust, by day and by night, all weekend long. There are two people in the car: the driver and the co-driver who reads the pace notes into his headphones. The driver enters a corner he cannot yet see and the only thing he has is the voice beside him. The Italian rally is run on Sardinia and has a signature of its own: narrow gravel roads running between rocks and low bushes, tight, extremely technical, downright waiting for a mistake. A few centimeters off line and it is over, which makes it one of the most demanding gravel events of the rally calendar.
The basic rule: decals belong on gloss clear coat. On a matte finish microscopic air is caught under the decal, the edges turn white and the decal silvers, the most common mistake of all. For the rounded areas of the body reach for decal softener, which softens the marking and literally draws it into the shape. Next comes clear coat over the decals, and only after that weathering. It is weathering that makes a rally model a rally model: this car is not meant to be clean. Dust settled in the grilles, mud in the lower part of the body, fenders battered by stones. Weathering pigments, washes and mud effects are what it calls for, and while you would not want them on a circuit car, here they are exactly in place.
The package contains decals only. The kit, paints, clear coats and softener are not included.
