About product

Porsche 934 RSR Denver, No. 87, Le Mans 1979, a Studio27 decal sheet, 1:24

A decal sheet in 1:24 scale from Studio27 with the livery of the car that started in the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1979 with race number 87. An important notice right at the start: this is not a kit. You are not buying a model, but a sheet of markings. The basic model, the Porsche 934 kit from Tamiya, has to be on hand or bought separately; the same goes for the paints and the glue.

A customer car with a thousand faces

The Porsche 934 is a racing 911 Turbo built to the Group 4 rules for the middle of the 1970s: a turbocharged flat-six, huge flared fenders, a front spoiler and a massive rear wing. The designation Turbo RSR was commonly used for it, because Porsche also listed the car under the name 911 Turbo Carrera RSR. It was not a works special: the 934 was a customer car meant for sale to private teams, and that is exactly why it appeared in dozens of utterly different color schemes all over the world. From that follows the point of decal sheets as well: the box from Tamiya offers one or two liveries, whereas with a sheet you build precisely that car from precisely that race which appeals to you.

The car with number 87 from Le Mans 1979 started in the Group 4 class with the crew of Christian Bussi and Bernard Salam. The Denver marking on the body belonged to the sponsor, a clothing brand. The car did not finish the race, as it dropped out after an accident in the second half of it. Even so it is a typical Le Mans story: a private car, a small team and twenty-four hours against the clock. Incidentally, it was the 1979 running that was won by the Porsche 935 of the Kremer team.

How to go about the decals

Have gloss clear coat ready, because decals are applied over a gloss only. On a matte surface air is caught under the film and the decal starts to silver along the edges; it is the most common mistake on models of racing cars and it cannot be taken back. The fenders of the 934 are very bulging, so get decal softener: the film softens, adheres to the curve and does not wrinkle. Count on the fact that the sheet does not cover the whole body: the basic color has to be sprayed and it is a good idea to consider the shades before the build. Once the decals have dried, clear coat and polishing follow, which sink the markings below the surface and give the model a wet shine.

Who the sheet is for

  • owners of the Porsche 934 kit from Tamiya
  • fans of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and of the private teams of the late 1970s
  • collectors who build particular cars from particular races
  • modelers with experience of decals on markedly curved areas

The package contains decals only, not the kit, paints, glue, softener or clear coat. Other Porsche 934 liveries were made as well, so a whole parade of the same car in different colors can be built.

FAQ

No, this is a decal sheet only. The Porsche 934 kit from Tamiya has to be bought separately.

It did not finish the race, retiring after an accident in the second half of it. The crew was made up of Christian Bussi and Bernard Salam.

Porsche also listed the car under the designation 911 Turbo Carrera RSR, which is why it commonly appears as the 934 Turbo RSR in period material and in modeling literature.

Matte clear coat is microscopically rough, air stays under the film of the decal and the edges silver. Apply them over a gloss and coat them with clear coat once they are dry.
