About product

Studio27 1:24 decal sheet, Ferrari 308 GTB Pioneer, Tour de France Auto 1982

This is a sheet of water-slide decals from the Japanese Studio27, a brand that specializes in markings for racing cars and has an excellent name among modelers in this discipline. Let us put it clearly right at the start: this product is not a kit. It contains not a single plastic part and you have to own a model of the Ferrari 308 GTB in 1:24 scale or buy it separately. The point of the sheet is different, namely to give a finished model the livery of a particular car from a particular race. A boxed kit usually offers one or two color variants, while a real racing car went through a series of entries and carried different numbers and different sponsors in each of them. The version a collector wants simply is not in the box.

The real subject: the Tour de France Automobile and a blue Ferrari

The Tour de France Automobile was a legendary French event without parallel: it combined circuit speed tests with long road stages across the whole of France, several days of driving, racing circuits and mountain sections in one event. The Group 4 Ferrari 308 GTB, prepared by the Michelotto workshop, was in its element here. The car of the stable of Charles Pozzi, the official French representative of Ferrari, was driven by Jean-Claude Andruet with his co-driver Michele Espinosi-Petit, known as Biche, and in 1982 he won the Tour de France Auto, repeating the triumph after his victory of the previous year. The color is a peculiarity: the sponsorship of the Pioneer brand brought a blue livery instead of the traditional Italian red. Years later a blue Ferrari is still one of the most iconic wrongly colored cars in history.

How to apply the decals

  • Only onto gloss clear coat. On a matte surface air stays under the film and a silver rim forms around the decal, which is that dreaded silvering and the most common way of ruining a finished body.
  • The Pioneer sponsor markings are large and the sides of the 308 GTB are curved. Without decal softener the film wrinkles and does not settle, and with a car carrying graphics as extensive as this, softener is practically a necessity.
  • Coat the dried decals with clear coat. The graphics soak into the surface, the edge can no longer be felt under a finger, and after polishing the model gains a deep, wet shine.

Compatibility and who the sheet is for

The decals are cut to the shape of a particular body, so the kit matters. According to the name of the product the set is intended for the model of the Ferrari 308 GTB from Revell in 1:24; please check before buying that you have such a model. The sheet will be appreciated by collectors of rally and historic racing cars, by Ferrari fans and by everyone who wants an unmistakable piece in the display case.

The package contains decals only. The model of the car, paints, clear coat, softener and glue are not included.

FAQ

No. This is a decal sheet only. You have to obtain the model of the Ferrari 308 GTB in 1:24 scale separately, as the markings are applied to a finished, painted body.

According to the name of the product, for the model of the Ferrari 308 GTB from Revell in 1:24 scale. The decals are cut to the shape of a particular body, which is why we recommend checking the compatibility before buying.

The blue color is down to the sponsorship of the Pioneer brand. The car of the stable of Charles Pozzi therefore went out in the colors of the sponsor instead of the traditional Italian red, and became one of the best known non-red Ferraris of all.

A legendary French race which combined circuit speed tests with long road stages across the whole of France. In its time it was among the most demanding events of the calendar.
