About product

1:24 decal sheet, BMW M3 Hilton, Macau GP 1987 (Studio27)

Water-slide decals from the maker Studio27 in 1:24 scale. This is not a kit: you will not get plastic, a body or wheels, but strictly the markings. To use them you need the BMW M3 (E30) model from Aoshima, to which the sheet is matched. It represents the blue and white combination with the sponsor Hilton, a hotel chain, from the legendary race in Macau in 1987.

The real subject

The BMW M3 of the E30 generation is the most successful touring racing car of all time. BMW had to build it because of homologation, as without a production road version the racing M3 would not have been allowed to start. The result is a body with flared fenders and a pronounced rear spoiler which you will not mistake for anything else. The year 1987 was the debut season of the M3 and the very first year in which the car won all over the world. Macau is meanwhile an exceptional stop: the Guia circuit runs along the ordinary streets of the city, between concrete walls and barriers, practically without run-off areas, as a single mistake means the end of the race. It is among the most demanding courses in the world. The touring M3 cars in the Hilton colors really did make their mark at Macau in 1987: the winner of the touring car race of that year was a BMW M3. Which particular car from the sheet ran which number is to be checked against the enclosed instructions.

How to apply the decals

The key rule: a decal belongs on gloss clear coat. A matte surface is porous, air stays under the film and the edges turn silver, and on a light, finely divided livery of the Hilton type that shows at a glance. So first the paint, then gloss clear coat, then the markings. On the rounded nose, the fenders and the spoiler use decal softener, so that the film is drawn to the shape and does not make folds. Seal the finished markings with clear coat and polish the surface, as a circuit special is meant to have a body like a mirror and no weathering suits it here. Do not forget that the sheet does not cover the whole body: you spray the basic shade yourself and it has to match the decals in shade.

Who the sheet is for

  • Owners of the BMW M3 E30 model from Aoshima who want a livery other than the box one.
  • Fans of street circuits and of the race in Macau.
  • Collectors of the history of the M3, as this is a car from its debut season.
  • Modelers who dare to take on the precise placing of a colored livery with fine lettering.

The package contains decals only. The model of the car, paints, gloss and clear coat, softener and glue are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. There is only a decal sheet in the package. The BMW M3 E30 model, the kit from Aoshima, has to be on hand or bought separately.

Always gloss clear coat. On matte clear coat air is caught under the decal and the edges start to silver. Once they are applied, the markings are sealed with clear coat and the body is polished.

No. This is a circuit car from a street race, so the body is meant to be clean and glossy. Leave the weathering to rally models.

Yes. The sheet does not cover the whole area of the car, so the basic shade is sprayed and it has to match the decals exactly, otherwise the transition will show.
