Before you order: this is not a kit, but a sheet of water-slide decals in 1:24 scale from the Japanese maker Studio27. It is intended for turning an ordinary model of the Audi R8 into a patrol car of the Dubai police. The sheet is prepared for the Revell kit, and the model of the car, paints and clear coats are not in the package and you have to buy them separately.
The Audi R8 is a supercar with a mid-mounted engine, quattro all-wheel drive and unmistakable side blades behind the doors, the contrasting panels that make it one of the most recognizable cars of its class. It was taken into service by the Dubai police as well, which has the most expensive police fleet in the world: besides the R8, a Bugatti Veyron, Lamborghini Aventador, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Bentley, McLaren, Mercedes SLS AMG and Nissan GT-R really do run in it. This is neither a photomontage nor a joke, these are genuine service vehicles. The official reason for their existence is not deployment in chases, but prestige, PR and a tourist attraction; the cars appear in prominent places and become a target for photographers. A pair of Audi R8 cars joined the fleet in 2016. The livery is shared by the whole fleet: a white body with a green stripe and lettering in Arabic and English.
The base matters most: the body has to be white. The sheet is designed for a white car, as the green stripe and all the lettering are applied to a white base and on another color it will not work. White is at the same time a color that sprays worse than the others: it needs a good primer, a clean surface and more thin layers, otherwise the plastic shows through. The decals are then applied only to gloss clear coat; on a matte surface air gets under the film and the decal starts to silver, which is the most common mistake on marked bodies. On the curved areas, and above all on the side blades and the long stripes across the whole side, use decal softener. At the end clear coat and polishing will give the model a wet look, and on a police car that is essential, because real service cars are always polished.
