This is not a kit. The package holds a sheet of waterslide decals in 1:24 scale from Studio27, meant to dress up the McLaren Senna plastic model from Tamiya — you buy the model separately. The sheet brings to the model the look of the Senna XP special in the version dedicated to Monaco: the red and white motifs of the flag of Monaco and race number 12 on the sides of the rear wing. The sister sheet is the British No.8 version with the motifs of the British flag — they are two different liveries of the same car, so do not mix them up (and by all means build both).
The McLaren Senna carries the name of Ayrton Senna, three-time Formula 1 world champion and one of the finest drivers the sport has had; he was killed in a race in 1994. The car is a tribute to his driving: no compromises, everything subordinated to function. The shape of the body is not pretty in the usual sense — every opening, every vent and that huge rear wing are there for downforce, not for the photograph. The abbreviation XP marks McLaren prototype, that is experimental, cars; several such Sennas were given extraordinary hand-finished liveries recalling Senna's famous moments. The Monaco version aims at the strongest of them: Senna won the Monaco Grand Prix six times, five of them in a row between 1989 and 1993 with McLaren. Hence the red and white colors of the flag of Monaco and the number 12.
The kit gives the shape; the colored graphics and the lettering are missing from it, or are only suggested in the plastic. Yet it is precisely those that decide whether the model has a story. A sheet of decals is also a very effective way of moving a model forward with minimal work: it is manageable even for a less experienced modeler. This sheet does not deal with carbon fiber areas — Studio27 sells the carbon fiber imitations as separate carbon sheets.
The surface must be a glossy and fully cured clear coat. On a matte surface the decal will silver — a gray haze around the motif; on the large colored areas of the wing and the body there is nothing left to save. The body of the Senna is full of curves and edges, so prepare a decal softener and work the film down slowly with a small brush. At the end cover the whole car with clear varnish and polish it with polishing compound — on a supercar the wet gloss is essential, and the edges of the decals vanish completely in the varnish. For the small lettering you will need tweezers and patience; the pieces are tiny and tear if you press too hard.
This is a decal sheet, not a kit. The car model, the paints, the varnishes, the decal softener and the polishing compound are not included in the package.
