About product

Studio27 1:12 Yamaha TZR250 Black Special — a decal sheet

A dress up sheet of waterslide decals from Studio27 in 1:12 scale, intended for the Yamaha TZR250 plastic kit from Hasegawa. This is not a kit. In the package you will find only the sheet of markings — the motorcycle model itself, the paints, the glue and the varnish are not part of it. The name Black Special belongs to the sheet itself and refers to a dark, black-themed finish for the model; the sheet is therefore meant for builders who want to build the TZR250 differently from the decals in the box.

The real subject

The Yamaha TZR250 of 1986 is one of the icons of the two-stroke era. Light, loud, with a sudden surge of power around the top of the rev range, it was the first real motorcycle for a whole generation and it is still called a road replica of a racing machine. The Japanese version was limited to 45 hp, and yet the TZR250 went down in history as the first production quarter-liter machine to lap the Isle of Man TT course at over 100 mph. Two-strokes of this sort no longer come off the line — emission rules put them out of the game — and that is exactly why they have become collector's pieces whose values keep rising. A TZR250 model in a dark finish is a rewarding subject for the cabinet: the contrast of black bodywork with chromed or aluminum parts looks excellent.

Application and painting tips

On a black base the gloss is absolutely crucial — it is on dark paint that every flaw shows most. Apply the decals only onto a glossy, thoroughly cured clear coat; on a matte surface the decal silvers and the light lines then look faded. The tank and the fairing of the TZR250 are full of curved transitions, so a decal softener is practically a necessity here rather than an optional extra — without it the long lines across the side of the fairing will wrinkle. Once dry, cover the model with clear varnish and polish the surface with polishing compound: the aim is for the tank to look like deeply lacquered metal. The black base coat has to be smooth and free of grain, because any unevenness will be emphasized under the varnish.

Who the sheet is for

  • Modelers who own the Yamaha TZR250 kit from Hasegawa.
  • Fans of the two-stroke era of the 1980s and of Japanese quarter-liter replicas.
  • Builders who want a dark, elegant finish instead of the factory livery from the box.
  • Collectors who fine-tune a model beyond the contents of the basic box.

The sheet holds decals only. The motorcycle kit (Hasegawa), the paints, the clear varnish and the decal softener are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. This is only a decal sheet. The Yamaha TZR250 kit (Hasegawa), the paints, the glue and the varnish have to be bought separately.

It is the name of this decal sheet and it refers to a dark, black-themed finish for the model. Whether it is also the name of a Yamaha factory edition is not stated here.

Microscopic air bubbles get between the carrier film of the decal and the matte surface and the decal starts to silver — it turns gray and its edge becomes visible. The surface therefore has to be glossy and cured, and matte varnish goes on only at the very end.

On a motorcycle, practically yes. The tank and the fairing are far more curved than the surfaces of a car and without a softener the decal will not settle and will form folds.
