About product

McLaren F1 GTR – Suzuka 1996, 1:24, Studio27 (Multimedia Kit)

A multimedia kit in 1:24 scale from the Japanese maker Studio27. Multimedia Kit means that the model is not made of injection-molded plastic. The body and the main parts are resin castings, supplemented by white metal parts, photo-etched brass sheet for thin grilles, hinges and flat details, rubber tires and decals with the color scheme. This type of model is built differently from plastic – and the result is a level of detail and fidelity that a mass-produced kit cannot offer.

The real subject

The McLaren F1 was in its day the fastest production car in the world and it held the record for many years. Under the engine cover it had a naturally aspirated BMW V12 and in the cabin an unusual arrangement: three seats with the driver's seat in the middle. The racing GTR version won the 24 Hours of Le Mans at its very first attempt in 1995 – and it did so against faster prototypes purpose-built for racing. In 1996 the F1 GTR cars also appeared in the Japanese touring car championship, where in the opening race at the Suzuka circuit they took the first two places and ended the season with the title in the top class. Suzuka 1996 is therefore precisely the moment at which the legend set foot on Japanese soil.

Building and painting tips

Before you start painting, wash the parts – that is the key to success. Mold release agent stays on the resin castings, and if you do not wash it off with warm water, detergent and a brush, the paint will not grip and will peel once dry. On a car with a large smooth body and rich sponsor decals that would mean ruined work. Resin cannot be glued with plastic cement – cyanoacrylate glue is necessary. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, not with nippers, because resin cracks. The parts have no pins and sockets, so dry fit, sand and fit them together. Resin dust is harmful to health – sand wet and with a respirator. Photo-etched sheet is bent, ideally in an etch bender. For the decals prepare a glossy surface and a smoothly sanded primer.

Who the model is for

  • Experienced modelers with experience of resin and photo-etched parts
  • Collectors of endurance and GT racing in 1:24
  • Fans of the McLaren F1 and of nineties GT cars
  • Those who want one particular car from one particular race, not a generic model
  • Not recommended for beginners

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, as a multimedia kit made of resin, metal and photo-etched parts. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a multimedia kit: resin castings, white metal parts, photo-etched brass sheet, rubber tires and decals. Plastic cement does not work on it – you need cyanoacrylate glue.

Mold release agent stays on the resin. Without washing in warm water with detergent and a brush the paint will not adhere and will peel once dry. It is the most common reason a resin model fails.

It is not recommended. The casting blocks are cut off with a saw, the parts have to be dry fitted and fitted together, photo-etched sheet has to be bent and sanding has to be done wet with a respirator. It is a model for experienced modelers.

Because it is a short-run racing special in one particular specification from one particular race. The big plastic manufacturers do not make such cars – a multimedia kit is the only way to have them in the cabinet.
