About product

Yamaha YZR500 – a Studio27 detail set, 1:12 scale

This item is not a motorcycle kit. It is an additional detail set from the Japanese maker Studio27, intended to improve the Yamaha YZR500 plastic kit from Hasegawa in 1:12 scale. The basic model, the glue and the paints are not included in the package – you buy the set as an addition to a model you already have or will obtain separately. The aim is to replace coarser plastic parts with finer elements and to add details that an injection mold cannot produce.

The real subject

The Yamaha YZR500 is a two-stroke racing motorcycle from the era when the premier class of the world championship was contested on 500 cc two-strokes — that is, before the arrival of today's four-stroke MotoGP. It was one of the most successful machines of its time: titles were won on it by Kenny Roberts (1978, 1979, 1980), Eddie Lawson (1984, 1986, 1988) and Wayne Rainey (1990, 1991, 1992). A two-stroke had an extremely abrupt power delivery — the engine came in practically as a step, the rear wheel lost traction and the machine moved around under the rider. That is exactly why the riders of that era are legends. Kenny Roberts moreover brought the style of American dirt track into road racing: he braked earlier, opened the throttle earlier and took the corner with the rear wheel sliding. In doing so he changed the way racing motorcycles are ridden to this day.

Building and usage tips

The set is intended for more experienced modelers – reckon with working on small parts. Before gluing, dry fit and fit the parts together, because the additions do not have the pins and sockets of a plastic kit. Glue the metal and photo-etched elements with cyanoacrylate glue, not with thin plastic cement – that does not hold on them. Bend the photo-etched parts in a bender or at least over a sharp edge, not with your fingers. Before painting, degrease the metal and photo-etched parts and prime them, otherwise the paint will peel. On a motorcycle it pays to leave the gloss clear coat of the fairing until last and not to overspray the chromed elements.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who build motorcycles in 1:12 scale and want to go beyond the contents of the box
  • Fans of the two-stroke 500 era and of the classic Grands Prix
  • Collectors preparing a display model, not a quick build
  • Advanced builders used to working with photo-etched parts and cyanoacrylate glue

This is not a kit. The basic model, the glue, the paints and the tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. This is an additional detail set. The basic Yamaha YZR500 kit from Hasegawa has to be bought separately.

The metal and photo-etched parts need cyanoacrylate glue. Ordinary thin plastic cement does not hold on them.

We recommend it rather to more experienced modelers. The parts are small, they have to be fitted together and primed before painting.

A two-stroke premier-class racing motorcycle from the time before MotoGP. Titles were won on it by Kenny Roberts, Eddie Lawson and Wayne Rainey.
